Susann's IOW memories

By Susann

I remember…by Susann.

Happy days of the Grand cinema, Saturday morning pictures at the Odean cinema followed by three pence worth of chips at Mac Fish.

Stokesburys fish and chips.

Victoria recreation ground.

The National school at West Street. Priory Secondary Modern School for Girls.

The donkey at Carisbroke Castle. Peticoat Lane picking blackberrys.

The steam trains, Sunday School treats to Sandown.

Oh the JOY of all the trucks and busy busy at Newport Railway Station. I remember that awful striped blazer the boys grammer in Lugley Street used to wear.

My great grandfather was the publican at the now torn down public house The Trooper Inn.

The joys of the American swing at Victoria Rec, and waving at the train going to Freshwater.

Fishing for tiddlers in the Mill Stream. The wonderful carnivals and the silver and brass bands. The spotted windows to match your carnival programe.

Dad working at the Post Office. Mr. Ablitt delivering coal with his horse and cart. Mr Moody and the milk cart.

The sunday school where the Miss Stokesburys and Mr. Croucher taught. The Castle Cafe as a teenager and "those Teddyboys!"

I returned for a visit in 1996 after leaving to emigrate in 1974 - OH JOY.There is no where in all the world like the I.O.W. - Caulkheads for EVER!!!!!!!!!
