Yarmouth Pier

Yarmouth is situated in the
Western area of The Island. The Pier the only one left in The
British Isles that is totally constructed from wood, apart from bolts,
screws and such like that hold it together.
There is a small toll to pay on entering the Pier, this helps towards restoration and maintenance costs. The Pier had a large and extensive restoration in the early 90's and was re-opened in 1994.

It is quite an enjoyable experience walking along here and the Wightlink Ferries birth nearby at the entrance to the harbour. |

The decking and handrails are of Douglas Fir and in order to raise much needed restoration funds the name of contributors who gave £25 was engraved in each of the 552 decking planks.
The piles are constructed from Greenheart a South American hardwood that is so heavy and dense that it sinks in water. This also helps deter the 'gribble' a marine equivalent to woodworm. |
