This was taken from The Needles Battery which is some considerable height above The Needle's rocks.  The first Needle rock is below the high drop away edge of the cliff and is not part of it although from the steep angle downward it may look like it is.

A closer view of The Needles Lighthouse.  It is constructed from solid granite and the walls of the tower are just over 1m thick at the base.  It has two white, two red and one green sectors of light to warn shipping of dangerous hidden rocks.
