Shanklin Old Village 1

Shanklin Old Village is a small part of Shanklin itself and contains some of the oldest dwellings the majority of them thatched.  It is on a slightly lower level than the town of Shanklin and is famous for it's small gift shops and tea rooms.

The Crab Inn is a famous sight being on many fudge box fronts and the narrow and twisting road through the village itself slows the holiday traffic down considerably.  Shanklin chine is also accessed from here and is a must on a warm summers night especially when illuminated.

See our Pub guide for personal recommendations of which pub to eat in or simply have a drink in around this area.

The Crab Inn
taken in 2003.  Good food is served here and it is nice to have a pint outside and watch the world go by - it does get very busy in peak season though!

The entrance to Shanklin Chine is down the narrow road to the right of this picture.  Note the drinking fountain behind the male cyclist.

Pencil Cottage gift shop is situated in the heart of The Old Village itself.  Gardens and a tea room are also behind this shop.  Go down the lane on the left of the picture to get to Rylstone Gardens and Tea Rooms with pitch and putt and crazy golf.

Go through the gardens and down a series of steps and you arrive on Shanklin Beach!

Looking down from the centre of The Village where the majority of the gift shops, small restaurants, tea rooms, pubs are.  Not forgetting Shanklin Chine is down there with Rylestone Manor and Gardens with tea rooms with crazy golf or pitch and putt.

Notice the 20 mph speed limit signs which is a good idea because this area does get very busy and the road has a bad bend in it and there is no crossing.  Installing a crossing in for the sake of a few months of the year for visitors would be safer but I think it would spoil the appearance of this pretty village.
