Pubs recommended for FOOD on The Isle of Wight - from personal experience

The Crown Inn, Shorwell

The Crown Inn, Shorwell. see picture above

Quite a large pub set in the village with a stream running through the pubs large rear garden.  Children's play area and plenty of outdoor seating with the option of feeding the local doves, and some large fish occupy the stream.  Nice interior.  Good for families.

The Griffin,
Godshill.
See picture.

Large single roomed pub which is very popular with families.  Very large garden at the rear containing a large maze in which the bigger children can get 'lost' and they do sometimes!  A dedicated play area for the smaller children and a new addition - a football kick around area for the boys, a good idea!  Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating.  Good for families.  Very limited car parking at the pub, but there is plenty free parking directly across the road. The pubs front exterior is not its best asset, do have a look around the back! The rear garden and patio areas do catch the evening sun here!

The Culver Haven,
Culver Down.   See picture

This takes some finding!  Heading NE from Sandown to Brading on the B3395 turn sharp right to one hell of a climb up to Culver Down and the pub is at the end.  Spectacular views from this isolated and quiet location.  Medium sized two roomed pub with a small conservatory facing Sandown Bay one way and Bembridge Harbour the other both some considerable distance below.  Limited outdoor seating to the front, small amount of seating to the rear of the pub. No children's play areas but the downs are adjacent with more car parking nearby.

The Hare and Hounds,
Arreton.
See picture.

Large part thatched pub that has had an immense extension a few years ago.  Plenty of indoor seating in three or four rooms and a children's small play area outside which overlooks Robin Hill Adventure Park, limited outdoor seating.  Thatched roof to the side of the pub - the oldest part of the building, good sized car park.

The Mill Bay Inn,
Ventnor Esplanade.
View picture and some more information.

Nice pub to sit out and enjoy a beer and the look at the sea and popular with food.  Two roomed pub with a large conservatory and large amount of outdoor seating.  A recent addition is the large Pergola and sub tropical plants within a large patio area which is excellent.  Sadly the children's  playground was removed completely to make way for even more seating - some of it could have been left alone or accommodated.

Plastic glasses are available and beers may then be consumed off the premises on the steps of the adjacent Bandstand or on the beach itself.  A sun trap at midday. Seafood.  Also owned by The Spyglass Inn proprietors.

The Sportsmans Rest,
Porchfield.

Despite it not looking it's best from certain angles from the outside this old pub is great for food.  Two small rooms with low ceilings, small area outside the front and rear and car parking is at the side of the pub.  It has a good choice of curries on its menu if you are after something different.  Food is not served all day.  Real ale from barrels on their side behind the bar area.

The New Inn, Shalfleet

The New Inn, Shalfleet.

Medium sized pub with many small original rooms together with exposed beams and low ceilings help retain it's old character. This pub specialises in seafood in particular and is a winner of many food awards. Limited car parking at the pub however there is another car park some 75 yds away, signposted. Food not served all day. Small rear garden, small amount of seating at the side of the pub.
