Proposed demolition of The Mill Bay Inn, Public House, Ventnor.

Second application - 13th April 2007 - REFUSED 25/9/07

The Mill Bay summer 2006

The Mill Bay 2006

Many thanks to
 Ventnor Blog  link  Ventnor Blog for alerting us briefly to this bizarre and unnecessary application proposal in the first place;

This application has been refused on 25/9/07, many thanks to all that helped in any way and well done!

Tuesday (25th) the IW Planning Committee are discussing the application to knock down the Victorian pub, the Mill Bay, to replace it with a five-story building, primarily a block of flats. To see what the proposal may look if it goes ahead follow this link to Ventnor Blog.

A second banner of objection has recently gone up directly behind and above The Mill Bay, this joins the existing banner that is displayed high on Esplanade House.

However the original plans have been revised and a new application put forward as of 13th April 07.
  From the front elevation sketch in the plans it appears to be 3 tall buildings will replace The Mill Bay and its outdoor areas, although the description labels it as;

"Demolition of public house, construction of 1/5 storey building to form public house retail unit and 14 flats with parking and alterations to vehicular access (revised scheme)".

Looking at the plans in more detail it may be one building with 3 tall elevations off that.

The proposal to demolish The Mill Bay pub, Ventnor {a conservation application because it is within a protected conservation area} has been refused by Ventnor's Town Council on 14th May. This is a good start to those who oppose such an action {which appears to be a large majority} however this is not over yet.

There is a link on Ventnor Blog to The I.O.W. Council where you may view this proposal and comments made or you can follow this link here to go straight there:

 Comments about this were due by 04/05/07 so you may not be able to leave a comment here.

However if you feel strongly about this proposal then go to http://www.iwight.com/council/meetings/current/committeeDetail.asp?cmteId=122  there are all the names of the members of the planning committee and if you click on the above address you will be taken to a page where you can email them all individually {this does not take that long using the power of copy/paste and having a couple of applications open at the same time, or simply email a few}.

The Mill Bay Inn is in the middle of this Victorian picture, and is copied from my Ventnor picture gallery, Victorian section.

The original Mill Bay building adjacent has not changed much although when the picture was taken it was called Corbould's {with magnification}, and the very tall building behind The Esplanade Hotel is still there to this day.

The tall building on the far right {only partly visible} is now called The Harbour View Hotel - its previous name for many years was of course The Pier Hotel.

Ventnor Esplanade as seen from The Pier
History:

The Mill bay was the only Inn on the seafront at one time when Ventnor Bay was then called Mill Bay after the mill powered by the waters of the cascade was built on the present site of The Winter Gardens.  For a brief period in the 1800's The Mill Bay was called The Pier Inn after the newly completed pier and the name reverted back to The Mill Bay Inn in the early 1900's and then Ventnor lost it's pier in the early 90's.

The now privately owned house behind the Inn used to be a salt water bath house - one of many for which Ventnor was famous for in the Victorian era.

My view:

This proposal if agreed would spoil the Victorian charm of Ventnor Esplanade when there is no real need to demolish the old Mill Bay building in the first place. The Mill Bay has been there for a very long time and is a busy flourishing business especially in the summer months. I am totally against the new proposal, too big, too tall and not necessary.

The Mill Bay has been there for over 100 years - please leave it alone. Why do this?

I have made my comments about this preposterous idea to the Council - and also recently to every Planning Committee member and I have had an acknowledgement although I am not a resident of The Isle of Wight.
