Food is plentiful on The Island and the majority of the pubs are highly geared up for it. Portions are 9 times out of 10 on the large side so make sure you are hungry! Seafood especially crab and lobster are locally sourced and Ventnor Bay crab has a strong flavour. 'Typical' average prices and foods from several pubs in The South of The Island, in 2006 are displayed below: |
|
Scampi £8.00 - £8.50 Crab Salad {not whole} £9.50 - £10.50 Fishermans Pie £8.50 - £9.50 Chilli and Jacket Potato £7.00 - £8.00 Childrens Meals £3.50 - £4.75 Crab Sandwich/Baguette {usually with side salad} £5.50 - £6.50 |

Obviously Restaurant prices may be more than those examples above... There are some very reasonable prices {although possible smaller portions but that suits some people with lighter appetites anyway} to be found at various Cafe's. There are cafe's on the Esplanade's at Shanklin, Ventnor, Steephill Cove for example and also at Rylestone Gardens, and The Smuggler's Haven Tea Rooms etc...a fresh crab sandwich would cost around £3.50, however I think without side salad. Fresh Crab and Lobster from The South of The Island may be purchased directly from The Fisherman's Hut {Blake's} half way along Ventnor Esplanade or from The Fisherman's house adjacent to the cafe' at Steephill Cove. Price increases: We have found that adult main meals usually increase by about 50p a year later.
