The Howden dam on drain

The Howden dam draining into the Derwents dried up reservoir. This was in overflow status the day before! Which is why the crest on the right of the picture is still wet and has weed on its surface.

The water cascading down was the result of Severn Trent draining the dam so that it may go on its way to be treated as drinking water. 1/250 sec F8 A Severn Trent worker was kind to explain what he was doing and why. He was the first person I saw on my walk at around 8.30am. The 30" valve was only 'cracked off' to drain the dam which had been deliberately allowed to fill up.

Notice the house set amongst trees near to the far tower, apart from a farmhouse there are no other buildings in this part of the valley for miles around.
